Harris Stratex Networks’ New Eclipse Adaptive Optimization Maximizes Backhaul Efficiency for Introduction of IP Data Transport for 4G Mobile Network Evolution

Barcelona, Spain - February 17, 2009 - Harris Stratex Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: HSTX), a leading specialist in high speed IP backhaul solutions for mobility and broadband networks, today introduced its new Adaptive Optimizationä for the Eclipse Packet Node wireless platform, enabling mobile network operators to maximize the bandwidth efficiency of the entire wireless backhaul starting at the network edge.  Adaptive Optimization frees up additional, high availability capacity to support the introduction of high-speed IP services in the network.

The new Adaptive Optimization capability will be showcased at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 16-19, in its meeting room located in Hall 4, Level 2, Suite 4.2HS18. It comprises a key element in the solution offered by Harris Stratex Networks for IP Mobile Network evolution and is available now as a part of the market-leading Eclipse Packet Node wireless IP platform. Adaptive Optimization for the first time combines Adaptive Modulation, RAN Optimization, and Pseudowire transport to deliver maximum bandwidth utilization and efficiency, while providing a low risk step to an all IP transport. Adaptive Optimization solves the lack of carrier class reliability when using Adaptive Modulation alone whereby adverse path conditions periodically constrict the throughput available for IP services increasing the probability of service interruptions for end users. Adaptive Optimization achieves this by increasing the 5x9’s available throughput for packet based services by up to 500% over what can be achieved by adaptive modulation only, without requiring additional frequency or bandwidth resources and without costly modifications to the installed radio and antenna equipment. The additional throughput can then be allocated to IP traffic that is automatically managed according to operator-defined quality of service profiles for customer traffic.

The Harris Stratex Networks solution, highlighted by the Adaptive Optimization capability, is designed specifically for network operators around the world who are introducing new mobile broadband services based upon 3.5G/HSPA technologies and simultaneously preparing networks for evolution to 4G/LTE.  This demand for extra capacity places huge pressure on the backhaul portion of the network. Operators need to be able to significantly increase the capacity delivered by their wireless backhaul with a minimum of additional CAPEX and OPEX spending, while preserving existing 2G/3G voice services.

This new capability adds to the impressive array of features supported by Eclipse for high speed Ethernet/IP transport, including embedded Layer 2 switch intelligence, highly efficient IP transport at link speeds up to 1Gbit/s and above, all with extremely low latency and network resiliency features such as link aggregation and patent-pending Resilient Wireless Packet Ring™ for carrier-class network convergence times. Eclipse Packet Node now is the leading MEF 9 and 14 certified wireless platform driving convergence between legacy TDM and future IP transport networks, in a cost-effective and low risk approach for operators still trying to determine their preferred evolutionary path. Harris Stratex is also a founding member and chair of the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Mobile Backhaul Work Group, which is seeking to promote and define the use of Carrier Ethernet services for mobile/cellular backhaul networks and their evolution.

“We are extremely excited that through this new innovation we can address the IP backhaul business case concerns of our customers by providing a market leading dollar-per-Megahertz solution, while also providing a simple, low risk, and incremental migration path to IP,” said Paul Kennard, Harris Stratex Networks’ Chief Technology Officer. “We believe this will help our customers avoid the backhaul bottleneck by being able to manage their limited frequency resources much more efficiently, and to create additional backhaul capacity to enable them to introduce new high speed IP over their existing wireless backhaul infrastructure and channel bandwidths.”

Harris Stratex Networks will be displaying its Adaptive Optimization solution at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 16-19, in the Harris Stratex meeting room located in Hall 4, Level 2, Suite 4.2HS18.
