(NASDAQ: AVNW), the leading expert in microwave networking solutions, today announced an $8 million public safety contract with a major California county. The contract calls for Aviat Networks to provide the planning, products and professional services necessary to replace the county's microwave backhaul network. Located in one of the Golden State's prominent metro areas, this large turnkey project requires antennas, routers and radios, which are designed to be FirstNet ready.
The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) is an independent federal authority that will hold the spectrum license for the national public safety broadband network. It has been charged with taking "all actions necessary" to build, deploy and operate this network, in consultation with federal, state, tribal and local public safety entities and other key stakeholders. It is expected to oversee $7 billion in funding toward deployment of this network, as well as $135 million for a new State and Local Implementation Grant Program to ensure the network meets state and local wireless public safety communications needs.
With FirstNet finalizing microwave backhaul requirements for the nationwide emergency network, it is critical that all states and counties install FirstNet compatible equipment. Aviat's Eclipse IRU600 radio provides the FirstNet ready capacity, availability, reliability and strong security features that will be needed for the integration of California's statewide emergency communications system into FirstNet.
